How does rotary lobe pumps work? Alfa Laval rotary lobe pumps, a leading choice among rotary pump types, consist of two intermeshed rotors affixed to a gear train. The gear train in the pump gearbox drives and accurately synchronizes the rotors, which is a key feature of positive displacement pumps. The rotors move in opposite directions, creating a partial vacuum that allows atmospheric pressure or other external pressures to force the fluid into the pump chamber. As the rotors disengage, a cavity forms and expands, filling with fluid. As the rotors engage, the cavity diminishes, displacing the fluid into the outlet port. Alfa Laval rotary lobe pump applications include transferring sensitive fluids and supporting hygienic processes in various industries.

This positive displacement piston pump features a pair of winged rotors or pistons that rotate within the pump casing, moving fluid around the circumference of the channel. As the rotors unmesh, they create a partial vacuum at the suction port, drawing fluid into the pump. The unique design of circumferential piston pumps ensures efficient fluid transfer as the rotors transport the liquid around the channel. When the rotors re-mesh, they generate pressure, displacing the fluid at the discharge port. The direction of flow in a circumferential piston pump is reversible, making it a versatile low NPSHr pump solution for various industries.

The centrifugal pump impeller, which may be a semi open impeller or another design depending on the application, is mounted on a shaft driven by an electric motor. As it rotates, this essential part of industrial centrifugal pumps transfers energy to the liquid, thereby increasing pressure. The increase in pressure is due to the centrifugal force generated, a principle common to various types of centrifugal pumps, which subsequently increases the kinetic energy of the liquid.

A single electric motor drive enables the high-shear mixers to blend a wide variety of product formulations. The mixers draw powder into the unit while simultaneously pumping the resulting powder-liquid mixture at pressures of more than 4 bar. When used with a rotary jet mixer, the powder mixers may also be used as part of an efficient cleaning-in-place (CIP) system. Powder mixers are available as stationary units and mobile units. How does powder mixers work? A two-stage inline powder mixer comprises a two-stage pump with a rotor-stator, a funnel, and an injector. This high-shear powder mixer machine is typically integrated into a circulation loop and connected to a batch tank. In the first stage, the powder mixer circulates the liquid ingredients through the tank. Powdered ingredients are then added through a funnel. A valve under the funnel opens, and the injector positioned under the valve creates vacuum conditions in the funnel outlet, drawing the powder into the rotor-stator and pre-blending the powder and the liquid. The rotor-stator (single rings) creates the main shear, efficiently blending powder and liquid into a homogeneous mixture using advanced powder blendi techniques. In the second stage, the pump’s impeller creates the final shear and transfers the mixture into the tank under high pressure. A portion of the powder-liquid mixture is recirculated through the injector back to the first phase. The liquid flow in the injector creates vacuum conditions in the funnel outlet, enabling dynamic suction of the powder into the liquid. After mixing has been completed, the powder mixer may be used as a discharge pump or a Cleaning-in-Place (CIP) recirculation pump to clean the tank when used with a rotary jet mixer. For specialized applications, an industrial powder mixing machine such as the Alfa Laval powder mixer or a powder machine mixer can further optimize the process.
